This holiday season, the Community Blood Center (CBC) faced a significant drop in donor turnout and a recent winter storm led to widespread cancellations of appointments and blood drives. The region is grappling with a spike in seasonal illnesses, including COVID, RSV, Flu, and cold, hindering many from donating.
Last year, blood collections hit a six-year low, down by nearly 18,000 donations since 2021. In the last three weeks alone, CBC witnessed a staggering 40% drop in donations, exacerbating the existing shortage. Types O-, O+, and B- are at a critical 1-day supply, alongside a severe shortage of platelets, far below the recommended 7-day inventory.
Our community is not alone; blood emergencies have been declared nationwide, emphasizing the critical state of our nation's blood supply. This shortage is a stark reminder of its fragility.
